What should I do if my rechargeable batteries overheat while in use?
Some heat is normal when using a battery. However, batteries that are hotter than usual could become problematic if not properly addressed. Examples of causes include:
When rechargeable batteries are overcharged with a constant high current, abnormal heat can be produced. If the batteries become excessively hot, turn off the appliance immediately because it will damage the batteries. The batteries will be ready to use again after spontaneous cooling.
When rechargeable batteries generate heat immediately after being inserted into an appliance, the batteries may short-circuit when contact is made with the appliance's terminals. This has the potential to cause the batteries to leak and explode. If this occurs, immediately cover the batteries with a thick cloth and remove them from the appliance without spreading any of the leaking liquids. The batteries should then be allowed to cool naturally in a safe place before being placed in a plastic bag and deposited in a recycling box at an electrical store.
